Brief History of the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria
Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Institution of Technology is a federal government research university in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. ABU was established on October 4, 1962, as the first university in Northern Nigeria. It was founded and named after the Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, Northern Nigeria's first premier.
The university operates two campuses: Samaru (main) and Kongo in Zaria. Funtua has a pre-degree school, which is roughly 85 kilometres from the university's main campus. The administrative offices, as well as the faculties of physical sciences, biological sciences, social sciences, arts and languages, education, environmental design, engineering, medical sciences, agricultural sciences, and research centres, are located on the Samaru campus. The faculties of Law and Administration are housed on the Kongo campus. Accounting, Business Administration, Local Government and Development Studies, and Public Administration are all part of the Administration Faculty. In addition, the university is in charge of additional institutions and programmes in various locations.
The institution offers numerous undergraduate and graduate programmes, as well as affiliate degrees, vocational programmes, and remedial courses. It boasts a strong medical curriculum that is supported by its own ABU Teaching Hospital, one of Nigeria's and Africa's major teaching hospitals.
The departments of Insurance and Actuarial Science, Accounting, and Business Administration were relocated from Kongo to the Business School on the Samaru Campus in September 2021.
